THE FIRST STEP
We take care of the forest that takes care of us
“You will be a Cedar for the nobility of your sincerity and your dignity. Hawthorn for the incentive to correction and conversion. Myrtle for discrete sobriety and temperance, Olive for the fecundity in joyful peaceful and merciful works, Spruce pine for elevated meditation and wisdom. The elm tree for support and patience, the Box tree because informed with humility and perseverance.”
The Book of Hermitic Rule, Year 1080
Thus the hermitage community born in the heart of the Apennine Forest of Casentino laid the foundation, with their first written rules, for their own lives in relationship to the environment, that surrounded the community and them. So it was said “We take care of the forest that cares for us” Care means to know, to appreciate, promote, protect. It is a reciprocal creation of a dynamic ethic that on a social, anthropological and economic level arises and develops in the experienced environment. For more than eight centuries the hermits of Camaldoli have given life to such ethics, of which vital traces are still visible fruit of an inheritance at times implicit, needing to be rediscovered.
It is for this reason that UNESCO, has shown it’s interest and has started a process of acknowledgement of The Camaldolese Forest Codex as an Intagible Heritage of Humanity
"The Forest Codex of Camaldoli, a non material Universal Heritage of mankind"

THE ROOTS OF AN ETHICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAN AND THE ENVIRONMENT
In the year 1080 Rudolfo ,the fourth Prior of Camaldoli (1074- 1089) Wrote the first “Constitutiones ” to discipline the hermItic life that began at Campo Amabile in a clearing in the Appenine forest near Arezzo , Today the hermitage of Camaldoli , surrounded as it was by the forest which became the protector of the new inhabitants , who then in their turn protected it. this reciprocal support became a constant sharing .
“Care means to know, appreciate, promote, and protect.”
A group of people who want a dialogue between the various disciplines that deal with humankind and the environment.
Entering it’s spaces, above all living in a cell, you can experience Silence, it is an invisible embrace of spiritual energy that greets, protects, and elevates.
Camaldoli is a community of Benedictine monks , the sacred hermitage and the monastery immersed in the peace of the forest, represents two fundamental dimensions of the monastic experience.
